How to choose the right makeup artist for your big day

Hey there, brides-to-be!

Here’s how to choose the right makeup artist for your big day.

And how to make sure you’re avoiding the wrong makeup artist at all costs  so you can look and feel your very best.

Congratulations on getting engaged — this is such an exciting season in your life.

If you’re newly engaged, you’re probably brimming with ideas and energy and Pinning like a madwoman. If you’ve been engaged and planning for a few months, you might be starting to get decision fatigue — there are just so many choices.

Let me take one big choice off your shoulders. Read this easy guide for some clear dos and don'ts on how to choose the perfect makeup artist for your special day.

DO: Find a makeup artist whose style aligns with your inspo Pinterest board.

Take your time scrolling through Instagram profiles and website galleries to get a feel for each makeup artist’s signature style. There are so many different styles out there, which is great — every bride can have exactly what she wants! However, if you take a natural, glowy inspiration picture to a makeup artist who specialises in heavier Instagramesque looks, don’t be surprised if you come out with longer lashes that you wanted and a thicker looking base. Instead, find the local artist whose grid is packed with beautiful examples of exactly what you’re hunting for and book her right in.

DON’T: Book in with someone whose energy doesn’t align with yours.

This might sound a little woo-woo, but it’s actually one of the most important factors when you’re booking your wedding vendors!

Consider this: you wake up on your big day full of excitement, you start getting ready, but you’ve booked a makeup artist who stresses like crazy. You feel her stress, and if you’re the slightest bit empathetic, you take it on: are those lashes going to sit right? Are we running out of time? Have I chosen the right look?!

Energy is contagious. You don’t wanna mix more stress with the bundle of nerves that will already be surging through your body!

Instead, aim to book an artist whose vibe will contribute to an even better experience for you and your bridal babes. Choose the artist who feels calm, loves a joke, and gets everything done on time without a flurry.

I’ve been told I have a really calming and relaxed presence, and I’m definitely always up for a fun chat. However, every wedding day is different. I take pride in the ability to read a room and the bride’s energy very well and to be whatever presence is needed at the time.

Not sure how to figure out a makeup artist’s energy? No problem! I recommend giving them a call to get a sense of their vibe, reading through their social media captions, and even booking in for a trial or another special event to get a little taste tester before committing to a full booking.

DO: Search for a makeup artist who is willing to go above and beyond for you at every step of the way.

You might be thinking, “Sure, Lauren — that’s obvious! But how will I know if they go above and beyond or not?”

Here’s a big clue: Look for makeup artists who have already put heaps of effort into creating incredible client experiences from the go.

This includes things like making booking a really simple, fast process; giving you all the information you need without making you search to find it; and being responsive and available to answer your questions. These things (in addition to a gorgeous portfolio, of course) are key indicators on how much a makeup artist cares about the quality of their clients’ experience.

DON’T: Book a makeup artist without reading their public testimonials.

Crowds don’t lie. Hop onto the artist’s Facebook page or Google listing to check out how their past clients have rated them to sniff out any dodgy prospects and filter through the best candidates. Do they have any poor reviews? What do people love the most about their work? If lots of people are singing their praises, you can probably call them a safe bet.

DO: Choose an artist who is selective with her products.

If you’re paying for high quality, make sure that your artist is delivering a fully professional experience. Ask your shortlist artists about what product ranges they like to use and why. Are they big name brand kit items? Let’s be real: cheap products aren’t gonna get you through a night of dancing your butt off. Feel beautiful and camera-ready all day and all night with high end products that will go the distance.

DON’T: Choose an artist who doesn’t specialise in wedding makeup.

There are some makeup artists who are exceptional at creating gorgeous looks for photoshoots and runways, but if that’s where their experience ends, they might not be the best choice for your wedding day.

Makeup artists who specialise in weddings know the importance of long lasting applications that will keep you feeling your best for the entire duration of your wedding — which can be up to 16 or 17 hours.

These artists will also be a little more well-versed in how the wedding day process works. The particular punctuality and energy a wedding expert will bring will make your day far more enjoyable and stress-free.
